The 3 Things You Need to Know about Grounding, Centering, and Shielding

In a recent article on exploring the five psychic ‘super senses,’ we generated a bit of discussion about psychic centering, shielding, and grounding; and how important this was when doing metaphysical work. The thing about opening your higher senses is that, unless you know what you’re doing, you can start to feel tired and drained very easily. It’s important to be aware of this, and to understand the 3 things you need to know about grounding, centering, and shielding, so that you can reserve enough energy for yourself, as well as prevent someone else’s energy from overpowering you. This ensures that you stay balanced and centered and able to sustain psychic work.

Think of these techniques (centering, shielding, and grounding) as doorways to your psychic energy. You don’t want just anyone walking in unannounced. You don’t want people just coming in and taking your stuff, your energy. You don’t want other people’s stuff dumped in your space. You also don’t want to leave that door open all the time, there are times when you just want to curl up with your own company.

Just as a door on your house can stop these things from happening, these techniques can stop them from happening to your psychic energy. It’s a form of psychic self-defense, and is one of the first lessons that I ever teach newcomers to the realm of working with their psychic senses.

Psychic Grounding

Everyone finds their own way of grounding, and it can be very frustrating for people to tell you to do it one way when that is the way that works for them but it may not work for you. I struggled for years with this, because everyone told me to ground to the earth, which did nothing for me. While it works for most people, it did not work for me.

It was only when I started grounding to All That Is, or the Universe, or the Divine energy, or whatever name you want to call it, did I finally experience what everyone was trying to teach me! Your birth chart can give you clues as to what methods of grounding are the best for you, personally.

Grounding basically means that stay focused and stress-free. One of the easiest ways to ground is to pet an animal. The act of petting is relaxing and creates a soothing hormonal reaction in your body that will help you to ground. Having a bath or shower can help, too, because you can envision your stresses being washed away with the water. Focusing on the flames of a fire or a candle, or using prayer beads, are good ways of grounding too.

What if you don’t have a pet, a shower, a flame, or some beads, though? You can ground by focusing on your breath. This is one of my favorite ways. No tools are needed, there’s nothing to forget to take with you, you don’t need special clothing or equipment, and you can do it inconspicuously, at any moment. Breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth. Breathe in relaxation, and breathe out the stress and the tension that is making you feel ungrounded.

Psychic Centering

I put centering after grounding because if you’re not grounded, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to find your center. Centering is a bit like grounding, but there are subtle differences. While grounding and centering are both relaxing and focusing, centering brings you back into your being, and reminds you who you are. Just like with grounding, there are different ways that you can center, and you’ll have to choose which one is right for you.

One way of centering is to focus on your strongest sense. This doesn’t necessarily mean your strongest psychic sense, just your strongest of the five senses—taste, smell, touch, sight, sound. A general rule of thumb is that sound is stronger in women and sight is stronger in men, but that’s not always the case.

When you know your strongest sense, work with it. If it is sight, you might want to close your eyes and use your mind to create a vision that is soothing and calm for you. If it is sound, you might want to chant, or repeat a mantra, or even just focus on a soothing sound that is around you. If it is touch, then a worry stone, a piece of soft cloth, or something else that is soothing to your fingers can help you to center. Taste and smell are a bit harder, but perhaps the scent of a familiar essential oil or the taste of a soothing herb would work for you in that instance.

Another means of centering has to do with finding your own center of gravity. If you have ever practiced yoga or Tai Chi or something like that, then you will know how to work with this point. It is not hard to find your center of gravity, and it can be done through visualization. I tell my students to envision a globe of light over their head, and another one under their feet and their center is the rod connecting the two. This helps them to focus on light and on their center and often brings them back to their core very quickly. This method can also help to bring your energy centers back into line, too, another reason to practice centering regularly.

Psychic Shielding

I’ve saved the best until last. I actually think this is the most important of the three skills, but unless you are grounded and centered, you’re not going to be able to shield very well. Once you are grounded and centered and put up your shield, then it will be harder for someone to knock you off your equilibrium.

Shielding is pretty much just what it says it is. It’s your suit of psychic armor that you put around yourself so that no one can impose their energy onto you, nor leach your energy for themselves. You’ll sometimes hear people talk about ‘psychic vampires.’

These are often people who drain the energy from those who are not properly shielded—sometimes without even knowing that they are doing it. Have you ever been in a room with someone and left feeling absolutely exhausted? They’ve drained your energy. Shielding can help you with this, whether it is in a magic circle, or just having to deal with a bombastic colleague or neighbor.

My favorite way of shielding is to envision myself in a rose quartz stone. Rose quartz is a stone that represents universal love. By envisioning myself encased in rose quartz, I’m surrounding myself with love, but also with a very hard exterior. It will be difficult for someone to penetrate it, and if they try, they’ll get love radiated back at them.

Another way to shield is to use the same technique of envisioning yourself encased in something, but this time, rather than rose quartz, use a mirror. In this way, whatever people throw at you will be reflected back to them. People who mean you well will have their good wishes reflected. People who mean you harm will have that intention thrown back in their own path.

We’ve used a toffee shield before today, too. Using the same process of envisioning yourself inside a bubble or a suit of armor, make the shield of sticky toffee candy. The closer unwanted attention come to you, the more it will get stuck in the sweet goo of your shield. I’ve found this particularly useful when dealing with people who want to bully. They want to be mean, and they cannot cope with the sickly-sweet energy of niceness that the toffee shield emits. They usually hasten elsewhere.

Finally, we’ve talked about suits of armor when it comes to shielding, and you can use that, too. Imagine yourself in a suit of full body armor, and then lower or raise the visor as you need to let energy in or out. You can create the armor of a certain color to match your needs, or you might even picture your armor made out of a protective stone that will bring benefit to the situation you’re facing.

Concluding thoughts on centering, grounding, and shielding….

When you first start to ground, center, and shield you may feel that it’s all a bit complicated, but I promise you that if you remember to start every morning, this way it will become second nature to you. Ground yourself when you awaken, center yourself as part of your morning routine, and then shield yourself when you begin your day. You will soon get so used to doing it that you’ll be able to top it up throughout the day with just a thought or a few deep breaths. It not only helps you when working with your ‘super senses,’ but it can also help you stay focused and keep tabs on your emotions in everyday life too so that you are one step closer to creating the reality in which you want to live.

Remember, there’s really no one right way to do this. We’re all unique, so we’re all going to have our own ways of dealing with things.

How does it work for you? I look forward to reading your comments and getting an animated discussion going. It’s in sharing what we do that we can help each other along the journey—and what a wonderful journey it is! Which ways do you employ the 3 things you need to know about grounding, centering, and shielding?
